Spotted in the streets of Denver, CO. If this is your car and you managed to read this, hit us up. The Fall '24 sticker pack will look good next to the right tail light. Another week, let's get into it.
Torment Weather Report: There's a record-breaking heatwave unfolding at what should be "the coldest time in Earth’s coldest place." For the past few weeks, temperatures have skyrocketed to 50°F above normal throughout parts of East Antarctica, leading many to believe that there will be a catastrophic melting in years to come. What does that mean for sea level rising? A lot, especially when these atypical temperatures of -13 to -22 °F are compared to the normal winter conditions of -58 to -76 °F.
"Most of the planet’s ice is stored here, and were it all to melt, would raise average global sea levels by well over 150 feet. Even smaller icy features, like the so-called Doomsday Glacier, could raise sea levels by 10 feet if they were to melt – catastrophic amounts for the world’s coastal communities."
One of the most inspiring stories to come out of the 2024 Paris Olympics yet. Kristin Faulkner wasn't even supposed to suit up for the United States this past week (much less podium), but with Taylor Knibb resigning her spot in the road race event, she took her place. Faulkner ended up winning gold with a last-ditch sprint at the very end of the race, finishing 58 seconds ahead of arguably the greatest female cyclists of all time. The craziest part: someone who doesn't even have a decade of cycling under their belt just became the first American woman to win the event in over 40 years.
"Faulkner, a Harvard graduate and former rower, got into cycling by riding her bike around Central Park in New York City. She attended an introductory clinic for women’s cycling in 2017 and by 2020 she was racing for Team TIBCO-Silicon Valley Bank, then the longest-running professional women’s cycling team in North America. A year later, she quit venture capital to fully commit to cycling. Faulkner now rides for the American Continental Women Team EF-Oatly-Cannondale."
The 2024 Paris Olympics slogan, “Games wide open,” is a nod to the fact that everyone is welcome at the biggest sporting event in the world. Parisian officials have furthered their efforts past slogans though, and we were glad to see that they continued the Pride House legacy project a week or so ago. "Pride House will be set up at Rosa Bonheur sur Seine, on the Invalides harbor in the 7th arrondissement of Paris," and will continue as the prominent LGBTQ+ initiative at the Olympic Games.
The 2024 Pride House comes in the form of a barge, and will host a bunch of different activities for LGBTQ+ and their allies. This is a step in the right direction, especially given the Paris Olympics have set record for number of openly LGBTQ+ athletes. 191 and counting...
Scott Stevens has spent more summers on Mt. Hood than we can remember, but looks like this year was particularly memorable. Another creative take on our favorite glacier.
Still can't watch Scott's summer footage without reminiscing on his iconic day in the life from 2010. To this day, the thought of Mike and Ike Zours and Smith IO's will unzip us to the above URL. What also unzips us is the fact that a coaching session at High Cascade can rack up more views than a fully funded project. Shit 'aint right.
K2 Snowboards made it out to Chile for a catalog shoot, but they decided to kill two birds with one stone while they're at it. Parker Szumowski's ROTY trip is going well, aside from getting the van stuck one too many times. Excited to see the content that comes from Parker, Gabe, Curtis, and everyone else in the van.
The Chile vacation continues with The North Face crew. They managed to make it out to the other side of Chile, and what better way to close out their upcoming project than with some heavy pow turns at La Parva Resort/El Colorado Centro de Montaña. Something special coming from Spencer Schubert, Blake Paul, and Colton Feldman this fall...
