It's a scorcher today—was yesterday and it will be tomorrow, too. A hot week across the board, let's get into it.
Torment Weather Report: We'll probably have to update this by next week, but July 22nd just became the hottest day ever recorded. Unironically enough, July 21 and 23 of this year also exceeded the previous daily record, set in July 2023.
“In a year that has been the hottest on record to date, these past two weeks have been particularly brutal,” said NASA Administrator Bill Nelson. “Through our over two dozen Earth-observing satellites and over 60 years of data, NASA is providing critical analyses of how our planet is changing and how local communities can prepare, adapt, and stay safe."
The 2024 Paris Olympics are well underway, and by day 3 we've already seen a handful of WTF moments. Yuto Horigome defended his men's street gold, a 14-year-old girl won women's street gold with a trick she learned in elementary school, and Gabriel Medina delivered (objectively) the most iconic moment thus far. That's only a fraction of the action though, so check out the rest above.
Still a lot of time left (Olympics end Aug 11th), but, as it stands, Japan is leading the gold medal count with a total of seven. The total medal count belongs to the United States at 26, with France trailing at 18.
The International Olympic Committee (I.O.C.) awarded Salt Lake City the 2034 Winter Olympics last week, but we did some digging and uncovered a less-talked-about residual from it all. The I.O.C. contract for the 2034 Games details some potentially problematic doping-related provisions, allowing Olympic officials the right to pull the Games if the U.S. authorities undermine the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
At the moment, there's some pretty serious blackmail accusations that make the WADA and I.O.C. look a bit suspect—specifically after the promise that "organizers would work to undercut a 2020 law that was designed to root out international doping conspiracies." Seems like both organizations don't want to give the United States total authority to enforce world anti-doping rules.
Louif Paradis just dropped a 2024 winter compilation on his gram, and that reminded us of his standout Real Snow part from 2014. He somehow didn't even place that year, but it makes a little more sense once you remember the podium: Bode Merrill, Dan Brisse, and Dylan Thompson.
Linking their Real Snow edits for justification: Bode, Brisse, and Dylan.
Fat Tire and Vans have been working on a limited edition beer can, and they just released the new checkered ale in Denver, CO this past weekend. We headed over to Bannock Street Garage on Friday night to crack a few with everyone, and managed to snag some photos along the way.
