A friendly reminder that somebody’s always watching. Might as well be us.
Torment Weather Report: After 208 years, the Farmer’s Almanac is officially kaput. Luckily, the 234 year-old, aptly named, and apparently also in existence, Old Farmer’s Almanac is still going strong. Scientists have pointed out that both the “new” Almanac, and the “old” Almanac have an accuracy rate of around 50%, i.e., a coin flip.
In honor of these almost ancient traditions, let’s see what they have to say about the coming winter. The soon to be defunct Farmer’s Almanac claims this winter will be all about “Chill, Snow, Repeat”, while the OLD Farmer’s Almanac pretty much says the opposite. With 50% chance of success each, one of these puppies has a 100% chance of being right, right?
Now onto the real news; Torment Issue 8 is out! Jacob Krugmire and a couple of dragons landed on the cover with Cole Navin behind the lens. The release party went off, chaos ensued. If you’re reading this and haven’t subscribed, here ya go. 40 bucks is cheap as, mate. Also this thing is 228 pages, more of a book than an “issue.”
It’s been a big week for women in the board world. Mia Lambson and Barret Christy were on The Bomb Hole talking women’s snowboard history and Mia’s forthcoming documentary, “Wayward.” They’ve got a raffle going on over there to help raise funds for the film. You can also make a tax-deductible donation if you got it like that.
The all-female crew United Chaos dropped an edit out of Finland. Savannah Shinske landed on the cover of the most recent Slush mag with a hefty maneuver on the steel. AND Mia Jones (daughter of BMJJ BTW) dropped some impressive powder riding.
Speaking of women, let’s cut to a boots on the ground premiere — report from SLC’s Izzy Gomez, who was on hand for the 686 Atlas/Curveball showing at evo Salt Lake:
“Atlas 2 hit hard, it was probably the loudest crowd response I’ve seen so far this premiere season. People were stoked on Curveball too. It was a nice change of pace from all the street-heavy edits we’ve been seeing this fall, with more of a pow focus. Bmo’s part stood out, definitely one I’d rewatch.”
Thanks Izzy, we’re excited for those to hit the web. Meanwhile, at evo Seattle, Capita and Union hosted their 25th/20th Anniversary party and premiere of Float. After turning Mia Brookes pro last week, they proceeded to turn not one, not two, but three more of their riders pro. Congrats Benny Milam, Austin Vizz, and Miles Fallon. We guess business is good?
Capita’s founder Blue Montgomery took the mic for a moment and didn’t pull any punches, decrying “publicly traded corporate snowboard companies, and snowboard companies that also make skis.” (Inexact quote here, a few beers had been consumed.) The crowd, much of whom were wearing Vans, North Face, Arc’teryx, Nikes, and/or Levi’s, let out a hearty cheer. Fair points though Blue, good on ya for staying true.
Finally, Burton’s two year project “Paved” dropped on Red Bull Snow’s Youtube channel. The riding and filming are predictably out of this world. Like, truly, mind-blowing. Everything else is, well, something? Haha, to each their own, but we will say… Or rather I will say (don’t want anyone else to catch heat for this take, and I fucking KNOW making shit is hard and intimidating to put out in the world). But the first thing I thought was, “This feels like a skier made it,” and I’ll just let you do your own research on that one. Wasn’t there a Torment sticker a while back that said “Talking Shit is My Love Language”?
Until next week, keep on rollin’ ladies and gents:
